BASEMENT

Promise Everything LP Run For Cover

Since abruptly announcing an indefinite hiatus only weeks after the release of 2012’s breakthrough LP Colourmeinkindness, Basement’s intensely devoted following has only grown. Promise Everything is the band’s full-length return to writing and recording since the break. Challenged by the spacing out of members not only across the country - but across the globe - Promise Everything was written by piecing together songs without the luxury of a space or even a time zone to share. Perhaps this is why upon listening, Promise Everything feels like a conversation between different people, revealing different moods and feelings throughout. This conversation shifts and evolves, filtering subtle, tasteful alternative rock touchstones through the band’s unmatched melodic lens. More clearly aggressive songs like “Brother’s Keeper” and title track “Promise Everything” situate Basement at the forefront of the rock world, pairing that aggression with an inherent sense of melody. On the standout track “Aquasun,” lyrical flow and melody overtake the listener while overt meaning gives way to musicality and its nuance. Despite years spent apart, it would seem Basement’s musical conversation has been one that has lingered even when after it was interrupted too soon by their premature & luckily temporary break, - and as their first true cohesive document, Promise Everything is only the beginning of what Basement has to say. BEASTMILK

Climax LP Magic Bullet

"Climax" is the debut full-length from Finnish apocalyptic post-punk rock quartet Beastmilk. The band is already heralding a fantastic review of the song "Love In A Cold World" on Pitchfork. Recorded, mixed and produced in July of 2013 at GodCity Studio by Kurt Ballou, the album features ten songs of staggering refinement, brilliance, and complete mastery the likes of which only rarely appear on albums destined for classic, genre-cornerstone status. It's almost paradoxical to consider, but "Climax" conveys a true, genuine excitement and all-consuming state of euphoric thrall in the face of the bleak, end-of-days thematic narratives spun by vocalist Kvohst. Instead of stereotypically brooding and glacially plodding through the inherent darkness cast from Kvohst's poetic spells, the instrumentalists of Beastmilk (guitarist Goatspeed, drummer Paile, and bassist Arino) apply a unique, surging catchiness composed of infectious anthemic charges and unbreakable spirit from beginning to end. Vinyl version includes digital download. On colored vinyl.

BEASTMILK

Use Your Deluge 7" Magic Bullet

"Use Your Deluge" was originally issued as a four-song 7" in 2012 on Svart Records in Finland. Early discoverers of the EP were treated to the apocalyptic, post-punk brilliance that the rest of the world would come to clamor for a year later with "Climax," the band's breakthrough full-length debut. The expanded fervor for "Climax" sent music fans worldwide in search of the entire Beastmilk catalog, which depleted Svart's stock of the "Use Your Deluge" and "White Stains" 7"s overnight. Rabid demand drove eBay activity through the roof and the band enlisted Svart and Magic Bullet to re-press the EPs in efforts to meet the sudden and increasing demand. Beastmilk is heavily championed by Darkthrone's Fenriz, Pitchfork, Stereogum and members of A.F.I. and Converge.

BEAUTIFUL ONES

Jaded Love LP 6131

At first blush, it might seem easy to dismiss The Beautiful Ones as yet another in a long line of current hardcore bands aping late '80s NYHC conventions. Upon further investigation, a deeper and more genuine aesthetic becomes apparent, as evidenced on their new full-length, "Jaded Love." The Beautiful Ones is not the sort of band that sets out to turn things on their head but, with "Jaded Love," they may be naturally stepping in that direction, and the results are striking. BELLS OF

00/85 12" The Move Sounds

1985 was a transitional period for the Washington DC music scene. Founding members of the hardcore movement pulled away from its original trajectory in search of a new musical direction. Rites Of Spring, Embrace, and Gray Matter are all well known and well documented examples of this time and shift that came to be known as Revolution Summer. But theirs were not the only voices. In the early months of '85, 17-year-old guitarist Lawrence McDonald set out to form a new band. His ex-bandmates from his previous hardcore band Capital Punishment were doing the same - Mike Fellows with Rites Of Spring and Colin Sears with Dag Nasty. Lawrence found vocalist Alec MacKaye (Faith), drummer Pete Wilborne (The 400) and bassist Bleu Kopperl, and Bells Of was born. Inspired by the budding movement of the time, the band moved quickly. By summer they began their first recording at Inner Ear Studio with Don Zeintara, and on August 11, 1985, Bells Of played their first show, opening for Rites of Spring and Embrace. Unfortunately, Alec departed soon after, leaving the recording without vocals and the band without a vocalist. Not wanting to lose momentum and having written all the lyrics anyway, Lawrence returned to Inner Ear to sing his songs for the first time. He pulled fellow skater Jason Farrell into the band as second guitar to help in a live setting while Lawrence transitioned to lead vocals and guitar. On October 25, 1985, Bells of played their second show, again with Rites of Spring and Embrace. It was Lawrence's 18th birthday, and the real birthday for Bells Of - a musical entity that has continued uninterrupted to this day. For reasons that are not entirely clear, this first Bells of recording was never released. After mixing the songs, Don Zientara set the tape box on a shelf at Inner Ear where it was forgotten as Lawrence set about writing more. By the following spring, Lawrence had shed all the songs, shed the members, and started over anew - a cycle he would repeat multiple times over the years. A few of the songs made their way across the country on cassette dubs passed between DC purists and pockets of fans with little or no backstory to the songs' origin. Rich Jacobs was one of those fans. He enlisted the help of Jason Farrell to track down Lawrence and the lost collection of songs to give them the release they both felt it deserved. The tape box was still sitting on Don's shelf 30 years later. 12"ep includes digital download and is limited to 500 copies.
