HEARTRIOT

Hands.Blood.Freedom MCD For The Core

Taking their moniker from a Strike Anywhere song title, this Tehachapi, CA based group knocks out highly melodic hardcore with a punk edge. In other words, less 'chugga chugga' and more... punk! With members of DIEHARDYOUTH, these guys go for a more personal sound. Too bad that the cover looks rather patriotic.

A NEW ENEMY/ SURVIVORS split

7-Inch War Machine

A split release between these two East Coast powerhouses. The Survivors play old school hardcore with an emphasis on being drug free and espousing a DIY ethic. Hailing from the Jersey shore and featuring members of Tear It Up and Let It Burn, A New Enemy play fast-paced, melodic hardcore. I've heard songs from their upcoming LP, so this is just a hint of things to come.

V/A

The Philadelphia Sound comp. 10-Inch Chunksaah

This compilation features the four best up-and-coming Philly hardcore bands, and also showcases the unique Philadelphia Sound. The Curse play steady hardcore with an emphasis on flailing guitars and honest lyrics. Paint It Black (featuring former and current members of lifetime, Kid Dynamite, and Good Riddance) take things back to '80s DC with a sound highly akin to Bad Brains with a political backbeat. Go For The Throat do just that, with classic-blue collar East Coast hardcore. Knives Out are a dark dissonant mix of early Black Flag teamed up with early 90's San Diego hardcore sound, reminiscent of Ebullition and Gravity Records. Their music may actually be even tougher than their name!

TO SEE YOU BROKEN

A Thief, A Poet, An Enemy 7-Inch Excursion

Crushing straightedge hardcore from this Washington based, all-female group. Powerful and moving music in the vein of Poison The Well. This is a novelty in the male dominated straight edge scene. They definitely know what they're doing, crushing melodic parts under heavy basslines and mosh parts. Right on.

THE SCARLET LETTER

Pure, Unadulterated-adultery 7-Inch Assault

Nine passionate tracks from New Jersey's The Scarlet Letter. The music is powerful and recalls the fury of '80s hardcore, while having some definite newer influences as well. Addding emotional and melodic parts to the mix of fast-paced, powerful and slightly psychotic punk rock, they’ve created their own blend of screamo hardcore that is highly original. What makes the Scarlet Letter stick out is their ability to successfully mix different styles. Ultra fast parts with melodic breaks, accentuated by different singers, and back to something else entirely. Somehow, they make this work again and again in songs that barely last a minute. Their musical complexity is matched by intelligently political lyrics that address serious issues. The 12-page booklet does not contain only the lyrics but explanations for every song, making it abundantly clear that these guys do not just play music- they have important things to say and want to be heard.

SPITTING TEETH

Don't Believe The Hype 7-Inch Havoc

Spitting Teeth play wicked fast thrash. The drumming and riffage approaches grind core speeds but is still pure hardcore thrash. The lyrics are humorous, yet pointed critiques of society and the state of the scene. Seven of the songs on this 7inch are critical trash core, while the last 'Hell To Pay' is more of a AC DC or later SSD inspired hard rocker.

R.A.M.B.O.

Wall Of Death The System LP Assault

RAMBO hail from Philadelphia and play heavy, fast, and thrashy hardcore that has great sing-alongs and mosh parts all over the place. Their lyrics span a variety of topics including riding bikes ('U-Lock Justice'), moshing ('Bike, Skate, Mosh'), riots ('Wall Of Death The System'), anarchy ('Circle that A Motherfucker'), religion ('No Circle Pits In Heaven') and a whole bunch of other important shit. This band stands for a lot of serious things, but also takes time to have fun, which is the way it should be. It's been a while since a band was able to blend amazing music, intelligent (and funny) political lyrics, as well as a ton of anger so effortless. Their LP comes with a huge lyric booklet, filled to the brim with explanations and information, not to mention the incredible artwork of Mike Bukowski. The CD version features an 18 minute cd-rom video that has clips from a bunch of Rambo shows that are just a total fucking riot, literally! The band wears camo and stages huge riot re-enactments with kids in the pit dressed up as either cops or protestors.

LET IT BURN

Here's To Goodbyes LP Coalition

The follow-up to their 10 inch, this is once again full of punk rock anthems, reminiscent of bands like KID DYNAMITE and STRIKING DISTANCE. This one rocks without a doubt. In the same vein as their awesome split with THE SCARLET LETTER. Pick this up.

DISASTER, THE

Black And White And Red All Over LP Assault

Lyrically dark and desperate, The Disaster come out of New York City with a blast of powerful and melodic hardcore with raspy forced singing. The music is classic hardcore with melodic sensibilities. THE DISASTER sound like the most incredible combination of KID DYNAMITE, IN MY EYES and AMERICAN NIGHTMARE. The hoarse vocals are hard and harsh. They fuel the music with angst-ridden lyrics about depression, death and other dismal outcomes. Great lyrics, fast-paced drumming, blazing guitars, and thumping bass propel this into a fireball of fury. Every song is short, unyielding, and lethal. While banging out straight-ahead adrenalized rhythms, The Disaster is capable of sneaking in gusts of catchy melody. Aggressive and vicious, THE DISASTER have delivered one emotionally fantastic release that emphasizes all that is right about having passion for hardcore ('color me colonial'), and all that is true about fatalistic thoughts in moments of utter despair ('an ode to a dawn that will never come'). Jaw-dropping artwork and packaging, along with the vibrant production top off a release that will turn some heads.

MELEE

One Way Dead End 7-Inch Lengua Armada

This is their follow-up to the split records with the Cancer Kids. Their best release so far. Early 80s style hardcore with an excellent guitar sound. The songs are catchy while going full throttle at the same time. This is the record Melee will be remembered for.

COALITION/ HOLDING ON split

7-Inch Martyr

I've been waiting for this to come out and I'm not disappointed. The two Coalition tracks are their best ones yet, melodic and agressive, with some serious mosh parts and singalongs. You're probably familiar with Holding On, so it'll come as no surprise to you that their three tracks rule. Pissed and angry. The Mike Bukowski cover is just the icing on the cake.

MY REVENGE

Both Feet Over The Line LP LP Element

My Revenge play a style of fast aggresive hardcore with lots of mosh parts that seems like it takes a lot of influence from the early 80's. The vocals are angry and the lyrics are about things like people getting caught up in drinking, skating, and just shitty people and things that suck. Can't argue with guys crazy enough to bring a chainsaw on stage. Did I mention they're straight edge as well? Skate straight!
