Unfinished Business 7-Inch State Of Mind

Heavy, no bullshit hardcore with pissed off vocals that are basically straight yells, but they really have an interesting edge that gives the band a unique feel. Not what I would call metallic, but it’s definitely thick as hell and hits harder and more moderately paced than what most any of the youth crew types of bands are gonna pull off. There are a few little bits and pieces of melody as well. Lyrics are pretty personal and they definitely make their point most of the time with lines like, 'Fuck love, it only grays with age…'. These seven songs took me by surprise... good stuff.

HAIL SOCIAL

s/t 7-Inch Dine Alone

I expected something completely different from this... what I got are two tracks of 80s- indie rock that's made some college playlists. Mellow enough to chill out to after a night of circle pits and stage dives. Limited to 500 copies, this is a teaser of their upcoming LP and a record even your girlfriend (if you got one) might dig.

DRAW BLOOD

The Calm Before The Storm 12-Inch This Blessing...

This band is unafraid to tackle larger issues that many are afraid to take a stand on, delivering an infectiously anthemic, but pointed social commentary over hard-edged rhythms that are classically hardcore. Draw Blood's debut EP, 'The Calm Before the Storm', brings to mind early American Nightmare and The Suicide File, which is high praise indeed. Available on a one sided 12 inch. The b-side has an etching and the whole thing comes on colored vinyl too. Pleasing to the eye and ear.

CARPENTER ANT/ HEADACHES, The

split 7-Inch Torn Tendons

Both bands are from the Lehigh Valley PA. Carpenter Ant play old school, metallic hardcore complete in style and recording just like this was a late 80s record that everyone would have mail ordered back in the day. A desperate feel comes through in their music, just like punk is supposed to include. The Headaches are a rudimentary (sloppy and simple, yet enjoyable in a DIY sort of way) hardcore band. They have an 80s East Coast US punk/HC influence.

BANE

The Note CD Equal Vision

To say that Bane has been a driving force in the hardcore scene for the last decade would be an understatement. The band is synonymous with classic, sincere hardcore and passionate live performances followers still talk about to this day. Enter Bane's first studio album in three years - 'The Note'. An unabashedly unapologetic 10 song wake up call to everyone who has somehow lost their way and become disillusioned with the state of today's underground music scene. Introspective and critical lyrics instead of the ever-popular slogans and their likewise mature musical style rewards multiple listens.

ARRIGT ANTRAEK

s/t 7-Inch Hjernespind

Punk/ hardcore from Copenhagen, Denmark. There must be something in the water up there, since they've got some awesome bands! While Arrigt Antraek aren't as fast as Amdi Petersens Arme or as melodic as No Hope For The Kids, they manage to hold their own amongst their contemporaries. Eight fast songs with melodic parts.

DOUBLE CROSSED

Your Attitude Bites 7-Inch LifeLine

Chicago's DOUBLE CROSSED plays fast, modern, anthemic, energetic straight edge hardcore along the lines of Carry On, Ten Yard Fight and Far From Breaking. Even though they are young compared to many of their contemporaries, their songwriting far surpasses that of most bands in their genre. 'Your Attitude Bites' is six songs of straight forward hardcore that will reaffirm your belief in the spirit of youth. Go!

UPSTAB

s/t 7-Inch Even Worse

CLEVELAND motherfuckers at it again!!!. Following in the proud tradition of this depressing cities shredding hc/punk tradition. Total relentless alcohol and drug infested nihilistic HC/ punk, that will make alot of bands nowadays look like safe garbage or 'cute', music wise hard to describe, but i'd say take some of the older clevo bands (H-100s, GSMF, Inmates, Cider), let em fuck with any early midwest/east bands like Necros, Guns, State and you get the bastard son UPSTAB! Suprising tempo changes and some dirty solos played over mid to fast tempo hc make this worth a listen.

SWITCHBLADE

Featuring Mattias Friberg Of LOGH 7-Inch Icarus

Their latest effort is a spectacular 2 song EP featuring Mattias Friberg from the Swedish Indie Rock band, Logh. His soulful voice, along with additional guitar contribution, add to the seemingly endless depth which Switchblade emplore with this effort. For all those who have been waiting for new Switchblade vinyl, the wait is over. The usual high production values of Deathwish (Icarus is a Deathwish sublabel) are to be found here as well, making this well worth checking out.

SUNPOWER

John Terror 7-Inch Deviant

Ripping fast hardcore/punk from Belgium in the vein of SSD, 7Seconds and Circle Jerks, which means they have a strong punk influence and a melodic edge. This builds on their previous releases and finally establishes Sunpower as a force to be reckoned with. There's more than a little criticism of the hardcore scene, still addressing the same problems as countless other bands years ago. It's not Sunpower who are to blame for that though (or so it seems).

SOLID GROUND

demo 2004 7-Inch Rad Session

SOLID GROUND features X-members of Crush My Calm playing crushing hardcore with some serious mosh breakdowns and sick chorus parts. All members have been active in the hardcore scene for a number of years now and their experience and expertise can be felt all through this impressive debut. These four songs leave you drained, but wanting more. Now their demo is available for the first time on limited colored vinyl. Watch out for their debut record soon. Highly recommended.

SO BE IT

The Wrath Of The Skies 7-Inch Deathwish

The Straight Edge kids SO BE IT join Deathwish with their second ep. Featuring members of Boston hc heroes THINK I CARE and R'N'R, So Be It are no strangers when it comes to uncompromising hardcore. This ups the ante of their first ep. Throw in an amazing production, very slick layout that has become a Deathwish trademark and the fact that this comes on limited edition colored vinyl and you know that you can't possibly go wrong with this.

SNAKE EYES

demo CD 1917

Snake Eyes are a new LA hardcore band featuring members and ex-members of Carry On, Terror, Internal Affairs, and Donnybrook. They play straight up hardcore the way it was meant to be played, full of aggression and power. Fast harcore with heavy breakdowns, the lyrical content is on the bleak and negative side of things, ready to fight. An impressive debut, not to be missed if you're into the bands mentioned above. Five songs on this professionally produced CD.

HOLLOW GROUND

Cold Reality 7-Inch Organized Crime

This Canadian act drops some vicious metallic hardcore in the vein of Hatebreed (especially vocally), though ironically there's both more direct metal here as well as more direct hardcore. Look for short songs that never hit three minutes and plow straight through chugga styled breakdowns, faster old school chord progressions with a few subtly melodic dissonant textures around the edges, some darker metal riffing that at times hits on some Slayer-esque runs, and so on. This also features Andrew from COMEBACK KID doing some guest vocals. Fans of TERROR, HATEBREED and (to a lesser degree) COMEBACK KID, take note. Colored vinyl in stock.

FxPxOx/ SECRET SEVEN split

7-Inch Moo Cow

Great fastcore / thrash from these two bands on this split ep. FxPxOx hail from Macedonia of all places and have numerous compilation apperances as well as a split ep with MY REVENGE out on Third Party, so you should know these guys by now. They provide six new songs and a UNITY cover (PMA). SECRET 7 from Singapore have an ep out on 625, so you know that they like their hardcore fast and raw. Six new songs here as well. Kudos to Moo Cow for giving world hardcore a chance to shine! Limited to 500 copies.

FRONTLINE, The

Withstand 7-Inch Grave Mistake

Classic sounding posi-core from Virginia's Frontline. This is very California circa late 1980's (Chain of Strength, Insted, et al) sounding but lacks the cheese and Hallmark greetings factor that a lot of bands in this genre have brought to the table. Positive hardcore that hits all the right spots and even looks like a release from back in the day. Dedicated and passionate, that's exactly what I expect from a hardcore record. I love this like all the other Grave Mistake releases. Five songs on colored vinyl.

DEFENSE, The

From The Start LP Crucial Response

You should think that there is little left to explore within the parameters of hardcore music and THE DEFENSE are here to prove you right, but in the best way possible. Their debut album 'From The Start', brings you 10 instantly memorable hardcore songs delivered with a combination of melody and emotion that gives this record an edge and make for a cool listen. These straight edge kids have their hearts in the right place and a keep sense of melody. The layout was done by Peter and is a mix of live shots and stone pillars that made no sense on the 'For The Sake Of Dedication' comp. LP, and are out of place here as well. Some kind of weird fetish maybe?

CLUSTERFUCK

Midlife Crisis 7-Inch Wintermute

There are 13 songs on this ep, but don't think you know what to expect. These are highly melodic tracks that have more in common with the DEAD KENNEDYS than 97A. Songs like 'Humans Disappoint Me' and 'Paula Abdul' serve to show their ability to address serious topics as well as their exceptional humor, another thing they have in common with DK. Very interesting.

CIDER/ HIT ME BACK split

7-Inch Still Holding On

Three new songs from each band on this split ep. South California's HIT ME BACK deliver crazy, high energy thrashcore/punk in the vein of Life's Halt, What Happens Next? and Heresy. CINDER play positive but pissed old school hardcore from the mean streets of Cleveland, reminiscent of bands like Nine Shocks Terror and Life's Halt. The cover sports a pretty rad drawing, so this is definitely a winner.

ANGER REGIMENT

Years after the 'Final Mosh', members of Floorpunch (Equal Vision) are at it again in a new band called Anger Regiment. WITH OR WITHOUT YOU

Six Reasons To Drop Out 7-Inch Give Me Strength

Comprised of the members from Diehard Youth, With Or Without You don't follow the same ethics of Diehard Youth in being a posi band, nor are they a negative band, or a tough band. They're just a band with a realistic outlook, with music and messages written about what they want to hear and say. Unlike other bands, they draw from a variety of musical influences, making it impossible to pigeonhole their sound. This is the vinyl version of the Martyr CD and definitely their best release yet. Available on limited color vinyl.

FULL SPEED AHEAD

Born To Lose LP Manic Ride

Finally available on limited edition vinyl!! Recorded almost four years ago, Full Speed Ahead’s swansong 'Born To Lose' has been sitting on the shelves due to artwork complications and the band’s untimely breakup. With a new full color piece by none other than Pushead in hand, this scorcher is ready to rip. Full Speed Ahead combine the anger and intensity of hardcore stalwarts Black Flag and Negative Approach with the skate punk energy of bands such as JFA and the Big Boys. This is one for the history books. I've been waiting for this to come out ever since I've heard the LP recordings, which was quite a while. So stoked on this.
